August 15, 2022Cats / Dogs / News / recommandations / Safety TipsAre you Prepared? Emergency disaster preparations are extremely important.  Everyone hopes we are never in a fire, flood, earthquake, hurricane, tornado and any other kind of emergency disaster but we must be prepared just in case. Most homes have a plan and an emergency survival kit that has the essentials to survive in case of an emergency. The kit should at least contain water, non perishable food, flashlights, batteries, glowsticks, blankets, extra clothes and important documents. These kits are easy to make and there are many great companies that make them. But do you have a emergency survival kit for your pets? Survival kits for your furry or feathered family members are a must to have on hand just in case. You can easily make kit starting with a waterproof backpack or container like a 5 gallon bucket with a lid full with bottles of water, enough food to last each pet 3-5 days, an extra collar and leash with a name tag (Best if collar, leash and tag is relective), a copy of vet documents, a toy or blanket to help comfort them in what is denfinetly a stressful situation, a kennal or carrier for your smaller pets, maybe even a life vest if you live in areas prone to bad floods. Make sure you have a photo of you and your pet together in the case that you get seperated from your pet it will help prove ownership and help other people and organizations assist you with being reunited with your pets. August 2, 2022Birds / recommandationsBirds are good pets? Birds can make great pets. They are definitly entertaining companions but there are a lot of things to consider before bringing a bird into your home. What kind of home do you have?  If you live in an apartment or condo complex a large parrot is not a good bird to have because they can be very loud which would not make you a very popular neighbor so maybe a little parakeet or cockatiel would be a better choice. Are you going to be home a lot?  Birds love to have a companion so if you are gone a lot maybe getting two little birds is a good idea. What kind of other pets do you have?  If you have cats you will need to make sure you have a very secure cage that they will be protected in. As cats are a birds biggest predator. Even a well behaved cat can’t resist the opportunity to get their paws on a little bird. If you have a house and a lot of time a large parrot might be the perfect pet for you. They are very entertaining and are known to aquire a great vocabulairy they are believed to have the personality and intelligence of a toddler which can be very demanding.  But you must remember they can be loud, messy, and most importantly live to be more than 50 years old! Once you’ve decided that a bird small or large is the right pet for you you then need to decide where to get them. I recommend going to a place or person who specializes in birds only as they will have the most information that will be helpful for you and your new feathered friend. More than likely the birds you get from them will be raised by hand with lots of love making it easier for that bird to adapt to its new family. When going to a large big box pet store you will find that the employees know very little about the breed, the age, gender and where they came from. Most often they are breed on a large scale and had very little if any interaction with humans making them very fearful and harder to tame and bond with. Exotic Birds Unlimited In the Coachella Valley we have a place called “Exotic Birds Unlimited” this is one of my most favorite places to visit. We take our birds there for grooming which consists of clipping their wings and trimming their nails. I always enjoy talking with Lee who has been working with birds for more than fifteen years and first fell in love with birds when he was just a kid with his pet cockatiel. Now Lee has his own store in Palm Desert California where he has birds, bird toys, bird food, treats, cages and just about anything you will need for your bird including boarding services.  Lee has so much love for all of the birds and so much information to share he always takes time to answer the questions I have.  So if you are looking for a bird or already have a bird and need supplies or someone to care for your bird while you are out of town I highly recommend going to Exotic Birds Unlimited and asking for Lee. If you are not in Coachella Valley, California I suggest you look for a person or store near you that specializes in feathered friends.   Exotic Birds Unlimited Website […] Read more…
July 19, 2022Cats / Dogs / recommandations / VeternarianThe Importance of Spay & Neuter There comes a point in a dog and or cat owners life where they have to make the decison if they want to spay/neuter. However when people think about this they usually don’t recognize all its benefits for your furry family member. Did you know that Spay & neuter actually widens your pets lifespan, or has been known to help prevent certain diseases and cancers? And that Spay & Neuter can have other health benefits? Some people beleive tha allowing our dogs and cats to have puppy’s/kittens is a great idea. But that can bring along a whole slew of problems to the pets and people in your community. It’s impossible to guarentee a good home to all of those puppies/kittens. Often those little babies are bought or adopted by people who do not understand that bringing a new pet into your home is a lifetime commitment. Sometimes when these puppies and kittens grow up  there is a chance they will be abandoned and face a dangerous and sad life on the streets or add to the over population of pets that fill our local animal shelters. Unfortunetly this happens quite a lot but you can help the change by spay & neuter your pet. So when you want to add a fur baby to your family think about going to the shelter to adopt.      Sometimes people don’t spay or nueter because of the cost. sometimes being too expensive. Try calling your local animal shelter to see if they have or know of any other orginization that offers certain days where they have discounted services for vaccines and spay & neutering. There are many reasons and benefits to spay and neuter and lots of resources to help you with these services. Research the options avalable to you in your community. What's Happening

May 21, 2024AdventuresCamping with Dogs If you are anything like other dog parents then you probably would like to take your fur babies everywhere you go including camping. Here are some helpful tips to think about before taking your dog on your next camping adventure. If you are planning to be away for more than a couple of days, you may want to consider making an  veterinarian appointment for a check up and to stock up on any medications needed for your dog as well as well as  flea, and tick prevention. If your dog is uneasy about car trips you may want to ask about an anti anxiety medicine or a calming supplement that you can find at most pet store or online. Make sure your dog is welcome wherever you plan on going. Of course we would love to think our fur babies are welcome EVERYWHERE, but, unfortunately that is just not the case. Do a little research on the places you plan on visiting to make sure they are dog friendly. Check out the rules and regulations for the national parks ,campgrounds, state parks, and hiking trails. Take some time to confirm your dog’s identification information is all up to date. Make sure that the collar has an ID tag securely attached with your current information. Consider adding a temporary ID tag with your campsite on it.  If your dog is not already microchipped you may want to make an appointment to have him or her chipped before your trip. It would be a great idea  to think about buying a little tracking device to the collar for an added peace of mind and to help find your dog quickly if they do get lost. Packing your dog’s favorite things We all want to have some of our favorite things on hand when we travel and so does our furry best friend. Pack a bag specially for your dog and include toys, blankets and/or bedding, collar, leash, treats, food, doggie waste bags ,and a  grooming brush. Depending on the weather and where you are going  you may also want to bring a jacket and booties or maybe even a cute little shirt or outfit. If water adventure awaits a life jacket is great thing to bring.  […] Read more…

July 19, 2022Dogs / News / Safety TipsTHE EVER-DREADED SKUNK SPRAY!!! The skunk. The worst smelling creature EVER to roam this earth. The smell alone is bad but when your pet is sprayed it gets worse!   Skunks are not often found in big cities as the prefer small towns and a bit more rural areas. Sometimes they are hungry and depend on our trash cans for a 5-star meal. Usually this doesn’t mean much besides a small late-night clean up, but if  your petsare  outside during the night there is a huge chance that  your pet will be skunk’d! One night our dog named Kitty (A rottweiler) was outside  when she heard a skunk sneak into our yard. She quickly started chasing it while barking.  This is when my mom rushed outside  to stop Kitty from hurting whatever was out there. At first glance without her glasses my mom thought Kitty had cornered a little kitten so she quickly rushed to stop kitty.  When my mom got closer she realised that Kitty had cornered a skunk! My mom ran inside to get Kittys dog treats to lure kitty away from the skunk but when she returned to get Kittys collar. It was too late, Kitty was wet with skunk spray  After doing some research we learned what to do when your dog finds themselves in this situation. Number one first thing to remember DO NOT BRING DOG IN HOUSE. We learned this one the hard way. In the morning we gave her a bath using tomato juice. We also found that there are other remedies like a mix of hydrogen peoxided, baking soda, and dawn diswashing liquid. There are also many different sprays you can get at pet stores or online. Now that we been through this we bought something called “Skouts Honor” A highly recommended skunk odor elimminator just in case this happens again.  The fact is skunks are rather cute and in ordainairy circumstances they are quite peaceful however, when they get threated they will spray.  […] Read more…
June 28, 2022Dogs / SummerBest ways to cool off your dogs in the Summer Ohh Summer time!  I don’t Know about you but I absolutely love Summer time. No school, longer days, BBQ’s, swimming and fun Summer adventures! But sometimes the hot tempertures can be very uncomfortable for both humans and our furry family members. Did you know that the average temperture for dogs is around 103 – 102 degrees? That means hot days are even more uncomfortable for our four-legged best friends. So it is very important to take extra caution during the Summer. Remember the ground is HOT on their paws so if you are going to walk your dog make sure to do it either during the early morning or the evening when it is cooler.  Or you can take them to the park because the grass may be cooler than the pavement. You might even buy protective booties so your dog’s paws can be protected from the burning hot ground.  Never leave your dog in the car! Dogs can easily overheat.  Here are some things you can do to help your fur babies enjoy the summer. 1: Consider buying them a kiddie pool to splash around and cool down. Maybe add a few fun pool toys. 2:  Try adding ice cubes to their water. 3: Keep them inside as much as possible. One of my favorite ways to cool down during hot day’s is with ice cream. I bet your dogs will love it too!  So here’s a great homemade peanut butter and jelly dog ice cream recipe for your furry friends to enjoy!               Here is the recipe: […] Read more…
