Birds are good pets?

Birds can make great pets. They are definitly entertaining companions but there are a lot of things to consider before bringing a bird into your home.

What kind of home do you have?

If you live in an apartment or condo complex a large parrot is not a good bird to have because they can be very loud which would not make you a very popular neighbor so maybe a little parakeet or cockatiel would be a better choice.

Are you going to be home a lot?

Birds love to have a companion so if you are gone a lot maybe getting two little birds is a good idea.

What kind of other pets do you have?

If you have cats you will need to make sure you have a very secure cage that they will be protected in. As cats are a birds biggest predator. Even a well behaved cat can’t resist the opportunity to get their paws on a little bird.

If you have a house and a lot of time a large parrot might be the perfect pet for you. They are very entertaining and are known to aquire a great vocabulairy they are believed to have the personality and intelligence of a toddler which can be very demanding.

But you must remember they can be loud, messy, and most importantly live to be more than 50 years old!

Once you’ve decided that a bird small or large is the right pet for you you then need to decide where to get them. I recommend going to a place or person who specializes in birds only as they will have the most information that will be helpful for you and your new feathered friend. More than likely the birds you get from them will be raised by hand with lots of love making it easier for that bird to adapt to its new family.

When going to a large big box pet store you will find that the employees know very little about the breed, the age, gender and where they came from. Most often they are breed on a large scale and had very little if any interaction with humans making them very fearful and harder to tame and bond with.

Exotic Birds Unlimited

In the Coachella Valley we have a place called “Exotic Birds Unlimited” this is one of my most favorite places to visit. We take our birds there for grooming which consists of clipping their wings and trimming their nails. I always enjoy talking with Lee who has been working with birds for more than fifteen years and first fell in love with birds when he was just a kid with his pet cockatiel. Now Lee has his own store in Palm Desert California where he has birds, bird toys, bird food, treats, cages and just about anything you will need for your bird including boarding services.

Lee has so much love for all of the birds and so much information to share he always takes time to answer the questions I have.

So if you are looking for a bird or already have a bird and need supplies or someone to care for your bird while you are out of town I highly recommend going to Exotic Birds Unlimited and asking for Lee.

If you are not in Coachella Valley, California I suggest you look for a person or store near you that specializes in feathered friends.
