House-plant safety tips

Did you know that there are lots of benefits to having house plants in your home? Not only do they look great but it is documented that they help reduce stress, improve your mood, help purify the air and many other benefits, but they can also be very dangerous and toxic for your pets.

   

Before you buy a plant

It is important to do your research before bringing new a plant into your home to be sure you are not bringing home something poisonous.

 

Ways to prevent pets from getting to plants.

 

If you find a plant you want that is toxic try placing it on a high shelf out of reach of your four-legged family members or maybe even hang it from a ceiling hook.

  Cat repellent spray

 

You can also look into buying a cat repellent spray for your house plant or make an all-natural one at home using water, lemon, lime or even orange zest or juice in a spray bottle and spray your plants because cats do not like the smell or taste of anything citrus.

 

Chewing behavior

Cats are especially known for chewing on plants. There are many theories as to why they do this. Some believe that eating plants may help them with hairballs. Others believe that it helps with a vitamin deficiency.

 

More than likely it is an instinctual behavior that they inherited from their wild cat ancestors.

To help satisfy their need or desire to chew on plants you can try to grow cat grass at home. It is easy to grow and safe for them to eat.
